What is Therapy?

What is the difference between a therapist & a counselor?

Therapy is the process of exploring, treating, and healing a high amount of distress caused by a person’s emotions, moods, and behaviors. There are many reasons our moods, emotions and behaviors often become triggering or give us a sense of a lack of control or feelings of distress. Often this happens in response to jolting experiences, traumatic events, moments of grief, and big transitions in life. This is a very human experience. Therapy simply offers a way to explore and process these emotions, moods and behaviors in a way that is safe and offers tools and guidance for healing in order to build resilience and lessen the feeling of distress in every day life.

Counseling and Therapy are two different words to described the same type of practice. And yes this can be confusing! You are not alone. The reason there are two different names, stems back to the type of education of the individual who is licensed as either a therapist or counselor. Counselors practice therapy with clients, however they are licensed as counselors because of their education background which is typically a Masters in Counseling. Therapists also practice therapy, however their licensed as therapists because of their education background. There are a few different educational masters programs that offer careers in practicing therapy such as; social work, clinical psychologists, therapists, and counselors. It is easy to get caught up in the credentials, however when searching for therapy services, focus more on the type of therapy a practitioner offers to make sure it will be the right fit for you. My approach

I work from a strength-based perspective that is tailored to each individual. What does this mean? “Strength-based” is a term used to described a philosophy of therapy that focuses on empowering individuals to build confidence and assertiveness in their every day lives. Which then helps us move through the world with resilience, awareness, and emotional intelligence and can give us a sense of control in world where we often feel out of control. From this place of empowerment, we can learn how to ease symptoms of anxiety and heal.

As a grief counselor, I create a place of safety and comfort to allow individuals to process their feelings of loss and what that loss means to their lives. While grief is something all humans experience, it is unique and personal for each individual. I work to help individuals find their own unique way through navigating their personal grief and to ultimately find healing.

My sessions are set up as talk-therapy sessions that incorporate meditation, breath exercises, somatic therapy, CBT skills, boundary work and mindfulness and yoga practices.

Providing you with a place to discover, explore, and be your authentic self.

I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship. So trust and safety are my top priority. With that foundation we can explore true change in the ways that will empower you.
